Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia
Denial of Electronic Payment by Landlord
In the instance where we pay our rent electronically (via a landlord provided website), and are provided an online receipt indicating that the transaction was completed successfully; what are the liability issues if the landlord responds days after the rent is due that the ePayment was denied due to 'invalid data' being submitted? We called the landlord sponsored customer service support desk when setting up the ePayment capability, and followed their directions to the letter. We have had (3) mishandled payment transactions by our landlord, and they now claim that we owe them attorneys fees, late fees and penalties. We have proof that there were sufficient funds in our checking account, and that all required information entered into the landlord sponsored ePayment website was completely accurate.

Re: Denial of Electronic Payment by Landlord
You should submit to the landlord your formal written objection to these claims by certified letter(return receipt requested)with the reasons you have outlined in your question.
Then, be prepared, if necessary to defend your position in the general district court.
