Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

Faulty Sprinkler Caused Damages

I live in a college dorm room and a faulty sprinkler recently cause almost a thousand dollars of damage to my personal property. My contract says the university is not responsible for any damages to personal property in it's buildings. Do I have any basis to ask for compensation from the University or the sprinkler company?

Re: Faulty Sprinkler Caused Damages

You might want to find out what caused the problem and the name and address of the sprinkler company and whoever installed it and/or maintains it to see if they can help. You should probably document the damages and put your request for help in writing to them. In my experience, courts often uphold these limitations of liability and plaintiffs don't often win these cases against the property owner. My email is below if you have further questions. Good luck.
