Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

Increased Rent

Our Landlord placed a note in our mailbox, 3 days before the rent was due that she was increasing the rent by $100 per month. We have a 8 month lease and we paid our regular rent payment without the increased amount and advised that we would not pay the increase and that we would move by the end of the month. We sent the rent by certified mail and have not heard anything else from her. She has cashed our check. We are sure we will lose our deposit. Can she do anything else to us on this?

Re: Increased Rent

Who knows, as you have failed to make clear in your question whether the landlord's action to raise the rent when and in the manner which she did was in violation of any of the terms of your current lease.

If it was not and you have simply terminated prematurely, your landlord would, in all likelihood have grounds to pursue you for whatever remaining months are owed under your current lease as well as any costs which she may have incurred resulting from your early exit minus

the amount of your security deposit which she has retained.
