Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia
Can my landlord tell someone I owe them money?
I broke my lease and when I did my ex-landlord call my parents and my boyfriend (who was co-leasee) 's parents and told them we owed money, how much money we owed, and the supposed condition that we left the house in. I feel this is a blatant violation of financial privacy. If that is true I want to sue her and the company. This case would take place in Virginia.
I do owe her money, there we some damages to the house, but nothing the deposit wouldn't cover, or that we had not asked her to fix already.
Also, we spoke with her and told her we were probably going to vacate the premisis and had arranged a payment plan with her for past due rent. Yet she acted like she knew nothing of this and we were trying to run off and not pay her. She does have a illegal detainer out on my boyfriend and I. Which is standard because we did owe her money. I don't think that should affect my case though because it's all private information between the landlord and myself. correct?

What you describe as a "blatant violation of financial privacy" is likely to be true only if your lease was covered by the Virginia Residential Landlord Tenant Act(VRLTA)and subsection (4) of Va. Code Sec. 55-248.9:1 happens not to apply to your particular situation.
