Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia
Landlord Tenant
Do I have rights. On August 28, 06, I went to view a rental property. The land lord and myself reached a verbal agreement. I payed the first months rent and recieved the keys to the property. The only thing that the land lord wanted to do was verify employment. The land lord did so. I recieve a call back stating that I would not be able to rent the property. I asked why and their reply was because I did not have a drivers license. I feel as if I have been discriminated against. I have a recept and I have the keys. I am due to move in on tomorrow. What can I do if anything.

Re: Landlord Tenant
Lease agreements for one year or more fall under the Virginia Statute of Frauds, meaning that to be enforceable they must be written and signed
by the party against whom enforcement is sought.
If your lease agreement was for that term and was oral, you should turn the keys back to the landlord and collect the first month's rent which you say you paid. Your lease is not enforceable under Virginia law.
