can landlords demand rent due on the 1st with no grace period to the 5th of month

Unless there is a so-called grace period provided for
in your lease, as far as I know none is required under Virginia law,
and the landlord is free to post a "5 Day Pay or Quit Notice" on the second
day of the month if no payment has been received and the lease provides
for no grace period.
