Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

Lease extension

I have lived in an apartment in Virginia for over two years. I am wanting to end my lease, but the is an automatic renewal clause in the lease. If I do not end the lease 45 days prior to the expiration, it automatically extends for another year. Is there anyway I can end this lease early? I can't wait another 9 months to move and I cannot afford to pay rent on this apartment and another. I have always been a good tenant.

Re: Lease extension

It is necessary to see the written lease, but you MAY be able to give the 45 day notice and go month-to-month.
