Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia
I live in VA and I have a question about a landlord-tenent dispute. I paid a $1200 first month rent + $1100 security deposit to my landlord before moving into her basement. I later found out that my landlord citizenship status could affect my security clearance at the job that I was moving for. So I receded my leasee agreement 2 days after signing and my landlord argeed to pay back $1200, but kept the $1100. She said, "I will give you back the remainder of the money if I can rent the place to another tenent in the coming month." However I heard nothing from her for 2 months until I contacted her, at which point she said she wasn't able to rent the place and I couldn't get my $1100 back, Can I get my $1100 back?

Sue her for $1100.00 + costs in your local small claims court. (You can begin preparing your case for the hearing by conducting your own investigation as to who might have been occupying the rental unit during the period that the landlord
claimed that it was unrented.)
