Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

I was living at a home for 6 months not on the lease. utilities included and there were 3 rooms. my girlfriend and i were living in the same room so we all divided the rent by four people. the home was unsanitary, holes in the walls, rat feces, mold. i moved out a month or so ago, now she will not allow me to come get my belongings. i live in maryland. i am considering getting the cops involved because she is requiring i pay rent before i can get my items, i said i could pay a portion but not all right now..she still insists on not allowing me to have it until it is fully paid. please help!

Forget about involving the cops in this situation as it's essentially a civil

rather than criminal matter. You could, however, go to the clerk's office

(civil division) of the Virginia general district court responsible for the

locality where this home is located and ask to file what's called

a Warrant in Detinue for the return of your personal property, and in

the alternative, if such is not possible (for whatever reason), then you

could request that the court enter a money judgment against the wrongful

withholder of your property for its fair market value.
