Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

When logging onto the online payment portal to check my November rent balance, I discovered my account was showing an amount due of $4354.29. My monthly rent and charges typically come to $2,100 with utilities so I called the leasing office and spoke with the bookkeeper. She then told me that my rent check from November 2015 was applied to my account but an audit done by corporate accounting showed the check never went to the bank so without notifying me in any way, they added this balance to my account. The check number they are referencing is check #7260 in the amount of $2,000. None of my checks even begin with this sequence-I only had temp checks and they all began with 10. It is not acceptable to have $2,000 added to my account without discussing their accounting error with me first and providing me the opportunity to verify the accuracy on my end.

Well, yes, the logic you've expressed in your last sentence seems virtually unassailable. (So, now what do you actually plan to do about it?)
