Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia
Long story short, my mom suffered from multiple disabilities which left her dependent on someones help, daily. So I stuck by her side and we eventually moved into an apartment. I was 20 years old at the time, unemployed, and with no credit but because of my age....was still made to sign the lease. A few months into the lease (3 or 4 maybe) she passed away, and I remained unemployed and broke. So inevitably, I was evicted a few months after. Now, this all happened 5 and a half years ago, and now...they've suddenly decided to sue me. I'm employed these days but still struggling ($1,000/month take home). Court date is in a few weeks, so I guess my question is; How screwed am I?

Probably, pretty much (screwed) unless you can construct an Answer and Grounds of Defense in
response to this landlord's lawsuit (or the third party purchaser of his accumulated debt) from your lease)
sufficiently credible to convince the general district court judge hearing the matter that you should
not be held liable on this claim. (Since it's apparently more than five years since you signed this lease,
you may be able to raise the affirmative defense of the statute of limitations which would begin
to run from the date that you allegedly defaulted on it.)
