Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

I moved in with a "friend" about a year ago. I never signed a contract, and she repeatedly stole money from me in an amount exceeding $1,000. There was a two month period where I was unemployed, so wasn't making money. I did not pay any rent at this time. My parents helped me pay for 2 weeks of rent,($150 a week) and gave me a little extra to help me pay for food etc, which also went missing. Fed up, I packed my things and moved out. Now she is calling saying I owe her $1,400 in back rent. I believe the money that was stolen is more than enough to compensate for that. Again, there was NO contract. Can she take me to court like she is threatening?

Sure she can. You can also call the police and sue her. I assume you can prove these thefts. Good luck.
