Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

non-refundable security deposit

My landlord told me that the non-refundable security deposit for my pets does not cover any damages that can occur to the apartment, which is different than what they said when we moved in. Is that true? the contract lists it as being considered as a general security deposit.

Re: non-refundable security deposit

In other words, your landlord is attempting to add

something to the terms of the lease which is not contained in the language of the written lease itself or reasonably interpreted therefrom.

If so, tell him you do not agree with this interpretation and that you will expect your security deposit to be treated as described in and subject to the terms of the written lease, only.
