Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

Notice to vacate

I have renters in my home in Va. They notified me via email that they were purchasing a home and would be moved from mine by July 3rd. I subsequently sold my home in MT and are closing July 5th. My furniture will be in Va. by the 15th. Now the renters say they cannot move until July 22nd. I cannot delay my move. We have no written rental agreement. What options do I have?

Thank you.

Re: Notice to vacate

If they wont leave, you can evict them but you would have to start immediately...but even if you did I doubt you would get them out in time for your arrival. I suppose you will have to arrange for temporary storage when your furniture and perhaps negotiate with them to pay for some or all the costs for storage and your accomodations. If they refuse, you may have to sue them for it.

Re: Notice to vacate

Are the tenants going to pay rent through the 22nd? Would you be able to store your furniture at the moving co. facility for a few weeks and charge tenant? You could sue them for the consequences of failing to move..you won't likely get a court date before July 22 & without a written lease it would be tough to recover.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.
