Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

Paying for carpet damage in rental

There is a doorway in my home that sustained some carpet damage because it was installed incorectly and my brand new vacuume pulled up strands. Needless to say the carpet company wouldnt fix that area but put down metal strips down over every other place in the house where the seams met and were starting to come up. Which the owners of the house complained about to the company but nothing was ever done. Now the owners are saying that I need to pay for it. Which Im not exactly arguing, but I dont feel I should be responsible for it. My biggest question is, am I legally able to require the landlord to give me at least 3 estimates before I pay for this? One owner was here 2 weeks ago when a rep for the carpet company came by to give an estimate. She told me I could have my uncle buy the carpet and put it in because hes a contractor. She paid $800 to carpet 1200 sq ft of this house the the company wants $430 just to do one room. Now she has changed her mind after my uncle bought the carpet and says she wants this company to put it in. The room thats supposed to get carpeted is 12x9. I seriously feel Im being ripped off. Especially when the rep and landlord told me it was .79/sq ft and when i called the business it was only .69/sq ft.

Re: Paying for carpet damage in rental

There is no such requirement, but if you can find it cheaper, get them to fix it and pay them directly.
