Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

I am the plaintiff in a civil case in Virginia with the Stafford General District Court. The defendant has failed to file his grounds of defense with the clerk of court by the date he was given by the Judge. Can I request a default judgment? When we first appeared in court, the defendant had an attorney with him and they contested the case. We filed our bill of particulars on time and sent copy to defendant's lawyer. I do not have a lawyer and as this is a relatively small claim, I would like to proceed as far as I can before retaining one for trial. This is a warrant in debt case.
