Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

Question about payments for repairs

I recently moved out of house where I shared it with 3 other people. I lived there for two years, and there were previous tenants before me. When I moved in I paid first and last months rent, plus a $100 pet deposit.

During my time there, my cat damaged a 6 inch section of carpet in the doorway, leading to a common hallway. When I had my end of the year walkthrough on the second year, the landlords pointed out the damages. They also said I needed to paint my window sills and walls(normal wear and tear, no direct damage from me).

I gave my landlords 600 dollars, but this went towards the painting of the walls, they are no asking for another 600 dollars to replace the room carpet and the common hallway. They are requesting that I pay 50% for both areas, and this carpet is over 5 years old.

Im curious... is this fair? I did tell them I would pay in email, but now that I am investigating further into the matter and everyone is telling me Im crazy since I already gave them 600 dollars for normal wear and tear, it makes me wonder.

I want to do the right thing, any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Re: Question about payments for repairs

Without knowing the total amount designated as your security deposit, it would be difficult to evaluate the fairness of this landlord's demands(in my opinion).
