Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia
Raising Rent
I am the owner of a duplex apartment bldg. I have tenants occupying one side of the duplex. They have been there for many years, even before I took ownership. Their is no signed agreement between me and the tenants. And I am getting ready to raise their rent and they said I had to give them 30 days notice. My question: Is this true?

Re: Raising Rent
If the tenenats are relying on the lease which they had with the prior owner, and which is still operative, then you must comply.
In any event you should have a new lease drawn
and put in place which covers these kinds of issues. (30 days prior notice for a rent increase is not at all an unreasonable requirement.)
