Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

Recently my friend got in a sticky situation and I offered to let her stay with me and my husband. It was known to be temporary until she can afford her own place but no official written agreement has been made. She does not pay rent or bills and I have not asked her to so she can save up money for her own place. She is now taking advantage, not saving any money, and trying to live off us. I recently informed her she has until January(it is now October) to find another place to live. So considering there is no written agreement or financial responsibilty on her end, am I entitled the right to ask her to leave at any time?

Of course, you can ask, but if she refuses, then under the circumstances described, you'll likely be faced with having to have her evicted by filing a formal action for eviction (warrant for unlawful detainer) against her in your local general district court. (Yes, just as though she were a lawful tenant and you were her landlord, such is the way the law has "evolved" in recent years regarding this particular kind of situation.)
