Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

I recently viewed a room in Virginia being offered for rent. After considering the rental, I contacted the landlord to tell him that I'd like to rent the property. A few minutes later, we met, and I gave him a security deposit along with one month rent. He said he would send me a copy of the lease agreement. Very shortly after exchanging the money (20-ish minutes), I changed my mind, advised the landlord of my decision and placed a stop payment on the check. No lease was ever signed. Does the landlord have a claim on my deposit and rent?

Yes, of course, the landlord could assert a claim, however, whether it's legally

sustainable is quite another issue for which (in my opinion) insufficient

relevant facts have been put forward in the question to offer a reliable

opinion in this matter.
