Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

Rental Request

My mother passed away 6 years ago. She left the house to me and my brother. My stepfather is living in the home. His name is not on the Deed. He lives in the house and only pays utilities. The taxes and insurance have increased over the past few years which my brother and I pay. We want to get some type of rent or compensation from our stepfather. How do we get him to pay us some rent? We asked him and he has refused to give us any money. He now has someone living in the home which we dont want and they wont pay any rent either. We do not want to kick him out. We just need help on the insurance and taxes as it has become a burden for us. What can we do?

Re: Rental Request

I suggest you contact an attorney to review the matter with you. Was there a will? Was there an agreement between your mother and step-father?
