Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

Rental security deposit

Our last landlord notified us that they had decided to tear down the house we were renting, and would not be renewing the yearly lease. They gave us 30 days notice in writing. There was no move in/move out inspection. Since they did, indeed tear down the house, shouldn't they give back our deposit? The house stood for another year but was never rented again. We did no material damage to the house, but we did not do a move out cleanup since they said they were going to tear it down. What reason can they have for not refunding our deposit? Some prospective landlords told us that ''you'll never get your deposit back from them'' when they learned who we were renting from.

Re: Rental security deposit

Well, how much longer are you going to wait until you send these folks a written demand notice to return your security deposit, another year, perhaps, to complement the one that apparently has already gone by?
