Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

I have rented a house for over a year. The ac stopped working early August. The landlord wrote to me that she couldn't afford to fix it unless she got a second mortgage which would take her some time. She also said the furnace was EXPLOSIVE and not to turn it on. I then, found a new place to rent and signed so I could move. But now the landlord has found a way to pay for the repairs here. Can I still legally break my lease without incurring more fees or penalties?
