If I am renting w/o a contract is there a time-frame of me living there before the owner can bind me to anything pertaining to the house?

You may already have an oral lease or agreement which
you don't realize already binds you to certain obligations/responsibilities
as a tenant on this property.
If so, your landlord will very likely be able to refresh
your memory as to its terms.
