Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

Rentor sueing for rent

I moved from my residence on June 1, 2002. New occupants moved in on June 7th, 2002. Rentor sueing me for full month of June's rent. Present occupants have paid June's rent according to their rental agreement. Question: Is it legal for the Rentor to sue me for monies already paid on same residence by the current occupant?
