Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

Roomate can't afford rent, won't move out

I signed a lease for an apartment with my boyfriend. Three weeks after moving in, he ended our relationship. He will not allow me out of the lease because he cannot afford the rent, and he will not move out either (says he can't afford it). I have offered to take his name off the lease and take over paying the full rent, but he says he has nowhere to go. Both names are on the lease and subletting is not allowed. The leasing office requires both of us to sign off for either of us to get out of the lease. He also refuses to pay for certain utilities (i.e. cable & internet), claiming he ''doesn't need them''. What are my options? I can't go on living with him for the next year, but I don't know what action I can take. I'm not even sure if he will pay for his half of rent and utilities when the time comes.

Re: Roomate can't afford rent, won't move out

You could move out and continue to pay your half of the rent(your price for bad decision-making, one might say).
