Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

Roommate Issue

I've recently moved out of the apartment about two months ago. However, the apartment complex sent me the bill for the replacement of carpet due to excessive stains, hole, and tares on the carpet, clearly from pet damage. The pet is actually belongs to my ex-roommate and he's taking no responsibility of this bill, leaving the issue to me and the landlord because he refuses to provide mailing information nor picking the phone calls from us. I've also try to work this out with the landlord, perhaps just paying my share even though it's not even mine, but it was refused and either to be paid-in-full and have me dealing with my ex-roommate myself or the bill is to be sent to collector.

I am wondering if I should let it go through the collector and defend myself in court, and sue my ex-roommate for damaging my credit reputation, or just pay this up and deal in court to get money back myself. Or any other suggestions? I 'm tired of this and it is clearly that this ex-roommate of mine is trying to runaway from it, leaving it to me just because I signed the leasing contract.

The pet actually came in months after we signed the lease for the apartment and I didn't even sign for the pet, nor would let this happen this far if I knew.

Re: Roommate Issue

Your second suggestion is the one that(in my opinion)you would be better advised to pursue.
