Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia
Tenant/ Landlord
On an unlawful detainer case, when the tenant disputes or contest the case, does the judge have to set another date for trial or can it be heard that day? Does the defendant have to show proof of how or why they are contesting the case?

Re: Tenant/ Landlord
If both parties are ready for trial, and the court's docket permits, the case could be heard on the so-called first return day. Otherwise a trial date would be set for some future date.
And, yes, of course, in answer to your second question.
