Legal Question in Legal Ethics in Virginia
Dependent Eligibility Audit
I received a letter from my co.'s h.q. today advising they were performing a dependent eligibility audit to help control health care costs. My husband has been on my health insurance from my day one with the co., over 15 years. I assumed they would want a copy of our marriage certiciate again but, no, they want a copy of our tax return. Other than my salary, which they know of course, my opinion is nothing else on the return is any of their business. Is this legal? Will they have to accept the return if I submit it with all the financial info. blacked out? How would you proceed? I feel this is a major invasion of privacy and there could be another motive for obtaining our tax return. Thanks in advance for your help!

Re: Dependent Eligibility Audit
Yes, the company's request is quite legal, but, of course, you retain the option to refuse it. (You might want to consider asking them specifically what information they are seeking in order to determine whether it might be provided by some other means.)
