Legal Question in Legal Ethics in Virginia

I live in Rhode Island was married in Louisa Virginia. The woman who married us was certified under a name that was not legally hers..I was told because it was the name she was certified under than the marriage is legal..how can this be true if she has no legal documents of this last name and am I legally married?

Thank You

be so during what you (and presumably your spouse) regarded as

a valid marriage ceremony.
