Legal Question in Legal Ethics in Virginia
Office Betting Pools
Are office betting pools illegal in Virginia? For instance everyone picks the winner of football games and places five dollars in pot, and whoever has best predictions wins the pot. If it is illegal, does an employer have the right to terminate employees who take part in the pools?

Re: Office Betting Pools
In the employment at will jurisdiction
known as the Commonwealth of Virginia, absent a contract or collective bargaining type of agreement protecting an employee from summary dismissal, employers don't need the excuse of a betting pool to terminate someone, i.e., they can fire as they please and with impunity-----as long as it doesn't violate federal antidiscrimination laws.
