Legal Question in Legal Ethics in Virginia
I am a published Author, and am new to this. I was fairly non educated on the ways of getting published, and I didn't get a lawyer. I would like some advice. For one, I may be getting published again,( strong possibility), & I don't want to make the same mistake twice. I need to know, for one, how to go about obtaining a Lawyer, and two, how to get them to possibly check into the book that was already published.
1 Answer from Attorneys
Well, it is not clear from your question what type of concerns you have, so I am not entirely sure what to suggest.
However, I am not only a lawyer but also an author. I sort of self-published my spy novel COLDE PEACE, but more complicated than that. My brother set up a small publishing house on his own and we published several books through it. We are familiar with the whole deal.
My brother in law works with a major publishing house (although their focus is very narrow) and I know a great deal about the publishing world. I also personally wrote the book proposal for the conservative blockbuster "Unfit for Command" after it was originally rejected by publishers. It went on to sell more than a million copies.
Finding an attorney is never easy. The Bar rules do not allow attorneys to advertise a speciality, except in narrow situations. Some attorneys are overloaded already. You have to be on the same wavelength. So there is no magic answer.
But I would be happy to talk to you about this and see if I could help: (703) 656-1230
