Disability and surgery.. If a hospital does surgery that wont allow you to work, are they responsible for contacting SocSec and beginning the process of getting info to SocSecurity to help set up Disability?

No, more likely not the hospital but the surgeon who performed this surgery
which supposedly has resulted in this disability or, perhaps, your current doctor
(if not this surgeon) would be in a position to provide a report/evaluation of your current condition as part of your application to SS that might qualify you to receive Disability Benefits.
