For the business to be liable there must have been (1) a defect that caused your fall (eg. broken step), (2) they had to know about (or should have known about) the defect, and (3) the defect had to be one that a person such as yourself exercising reasonable care would not have discovered. If the injury occurred on the property of the business, they may have insurance that will cover your medical expenses regardless of fault.
