Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Virginia
Abandoned Property
I bought a house with the former owner, that was in the process of forecloser, still living in the house. I gave 30 day notice of eviction, but the former own did not move out untill an accidental fire made the house uninhabitable. The former owner refuses to remove her possessions with an approximate value of $3000. I have started with the renovations of the house but do not know what I should do with her stuff. I would put it all in storage and give her the key, but there is a junk car in the back yard. I have set most of the property out on the car port. Was that OK/legal? What can I do with her property and car?
Thanks Lisa

Re: Abandoned Property
Give the former occupier of your property 30 days written notice to come and pick up her items of personal property or you will dispose of them as you see fit.(Certified/return receipt requested--with copy mailed regular first class mail to last known address).
Then, if she fails to act within the time frame in the notice, call one of the many junk car disposers for the removal of the vehicle and any other
charitable organizations which may be interested in any of the other items which you yourself are not interested in retaining.
