Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Virginia

Being asked for pet fees 5 months after lease ended

I had an apartment that I subleased on July 1st and I moved across the country. I just received a call now, in the middle of October, from the leasing company saying I owed them $460 for having a pet from January-June. I know they are making part of this up because I didn't get my dog until early March. Can they come after me this long after I am out of my lease? They are threatening to take it out of the subleasers security deposit, is that legal?

Yes, very likely your former landlord can legally pursue you for this pet surcharge even now, but as to whether it can be legally taken from your subleaser's security deposit, I have no idea. (That could depend upon the terms of the sublease.)
