Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Virginia

Hi. I am trying to break my current lease. We have just found a property for lease to purchase which we cannot pass up(deposit already put down). Our current lease ends Feb. 28, but rental agency requires 60 days notice. We did not give notice until today Feb 8th. They are trying to have us pay 1100 each month until Feb. 28th 2012 or until the property has been rented by another party. We have been living @ the current residence for 5yrs. and have paid rent on time, EVERY time. Also, when we first moved in.. DAY 1... the oven did not work properly (thermostat broken, would not stop heating up) they said they would replace it. They NEVER did.. 5yrs. without properly working appliances. Is this grounds for breach of contract? Can we get out of current lease without paying? Thank you for your time.

Hard to say without reviewing this lease as well as, perhaps, other relevant facts.

(If you're now month to month and you gave the landlord notice of your intended

move on Feb. 8, 2011, it's hard to figure as to how you could be liable for anything beyond March 31, 2011.)
