Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Virginia

Break a Lease, relocating to another state

I am trying to break a lease because I am moving to another state with my job. We have lived in this TH for 2.5 years and my wife just signed up for another year in Feb. The new lease doesn't start until July 1 and I need to be gone by then. The landlord is only offering us to sublease the place. Is there anything I can do?

This may depend on what the lease says. Some leases will provide for early termination for job relocation.

You might want to have the lease reviewed by an attorney.

Why was it necessary to sign a renewal almost six months in advance of your current lease's expiration? (That would seem to have been premature and, obviously, a mistake.)
