Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Virginia
Can I break a Virginia lease if work is out of the country?
My roommate has moved out of the country for her job and wants to get out of the joint lease we have signed. According to VA law, can she break this lease? What happens to me if I'm stuck with no roomate and did not agree to her breaking the lease?

Re: Can I break a Virginia lease
You both signed the lease and agreed to be liable for the payments. The terms of the lease govern - some leases provide for termination upon job relocation, but unless it says that both of you are released, you are not. Each one of you is individually liable for the whole thing to the landlord; whether your roommate is still liable to you for his/her share of the rent depends on the terms of the agreement between you.
