Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Virginia

child damages personal property

My wife takes care of an 18-month-old child in our home. He was in our bedroom with my wife while she was putting away the laundry. He found my glasses on the bedside table, fell on them, and damaged them beyond repair. The frames cost $160 to replace. Shouldn't this child's parents be liable for the damage?

They are claiming that a) he's too young to know better and b) that my wife shouldn't have left the glasses in a place that a child could reach.

Please help!

Re: child damages personal property

Yes, the child's parents have accurately assessed the situation from a legal perpective and their resultant nonliability for the damage to your glasses(in my opinion), but from an equitable perspective, why not attempt to negotiate some contribution on their part towards the cost of replacing your damaged glasses?
