Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Virginia

condo fees

I am living in a condo, the owner of the condo made me a 1% owner, so that I could continue to live there. I never signed anything or saw any paperwork, just a verbal acknowledgment from the owner it was done. Now the condo association is trying to make me pay the primary owners late dues. I have been paying the main owner money every month for rent and dues, so I had no idea he was not paying the dues. The association's secretary (also a lawyer) threatened to seek a judgement against me for the dues. Is this possible, and is there some way to get out of this co-ownership.

Re: condo fees

A verbal acknowledgement supposedly conveying you an interest in real property(the condo)would be facially in violation of the Virginia Statute of Frauds found at Va. Code Sec. 11-1 which requires a writing for all such conveyances(signed by the party

to be charged)and without such a document the kind of suit with which you've apparently been threatened would be unlikely to succeed.
