Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Virginia

Evicting a housemate

I invited my boyfriend to move into my house (I own it) several months ago. Things are not working out and I want him to go. He has established my address as his address for bills, etc. Do I have to give him written notice? He does not pay rent, we have no written contract. He says I have to give him 30 days and a certified letter.

Re: Evicting a housemate

You're the owner of the home. Your boyfriend has no rights whatsoever with respect to this property---not even the rights of a tenant.

All that you have to to do is to tell him to leave. If he fails to do so, he then becomes nothing more than a trespasser and you may call the police to have him charged and, if necessary, taken into custody. (No certified letter with 30 days notice required.)
