Fraud Contract

My friend was in a rent to buy home, Found out the home was not for sale by the owner. This was contract from a local company and was obvious a fraud, since the home was not for sale and never was. The local company put a judgment of $14000,00 on their credit. What can they do? They have 3 children and are having a hard time even renting something. We need help. They were not even given back their $5000.00 deposit back.
