Can an easement be defended and held without an eviction taking place?

Such an exercise as described would seem at least somewhat contradictory in its terms since easements are normally claims of right by owners of real property against other(usually adjacent property)whereas evictions are usually legal actions taken against tenants by owners to remove them from property that they no longer lawfully occupy.

In short, I am failing to grasp the substantive import of this question (if there be such).
