Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Virginia
Home owner - Single to Married
I own my home outright and remarried almost 2 years ago. I would like to change the name on the Property Deed to my legal name. What is the requirement for the state of Va?

Re: Home owner - Single to Married
Very simple. You have another deed drawn up to reflect your new married name and your new marital status (from an unmarried woman to a married woman). This is relatively inespensive... the deed itself should only be no more than $175. Ancillary services might be a good idea such as a title search to assure that you have a clear title and an opinion letter to go with it (the attorney can either charge you a flat fee or an hourly fee). Having said this... if you have no intention of putting your husband on title as well... the deed can stay as it is... simply when you do a refinance or sell the house you will need to prove that the new you is the same as the person who acquired the property in the first place. Normally speaking you would provide your driver's license with your new married name and your marriage certificate which shows your maiden name as well.
