Homestead Act

I would like to know what exactlly does the Homestead Act entail?

In Virginia, the only "homestead" is not a homestead at all. It is an exmption to execution on a judgment (or in bankruptcy) of up to $5000 per householder (=adult) plus $500 per dependent, plus $2000 if the householder is a disabled veteran. It can be used for real or personal property and is claimed by filing a "homestead deed" in the land records.
