Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Virginia

My husband and I planned on buying the house we are currently leasing. We signed a buying contract as well as a lease. The contract date to close was Febuary 2008 and that is when our lease was up as well. We also paid our realtor a deposit/earnest money in which they are holding and if we dont buy the house it goes to the owners as a deposit. My husband has been moved for work and we can no longer buy the property. We have been told by our reatltor that we no longer have any legal ties to the property but we are concerned because we dont know if the owners can come back and make us pay to fix everything that could be wrong with the property. The roof is leaking and has caused the drywall to fall in our bathroom, when we called the owners they act like its our job to fix(as this as been the case with everything that has gone very wrong with the house). My question is whos job is it to fix these things?

The lease itself should make clear who is responsible for these kinds of repairs,

namely the landlord unless you and your husband somehow are responsible for

causing or creating the situations which now require this repair.
