Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Virginia

Laws on Property Lines in Virginia? My back door neighbor put up a privacy fence and refuses to maintain the gap that is between the two properties... what can I do? I have been to the county and the neighbors are now saying that the land is not there's to maintain. They maintained it before they put up a fence, why not now? With me in a wheelchair, and living alone, there is no way for me to weedeat the strip. It's only about a foot wide....

Code enforcement is your remedy, as I've already answered,

even if you have to call the mayor or the city manager or whomever

to get it done.

However, bear in mind that merely because your neighbor maintained

this sliver of real estate before the fence was erected, doesn't necessarily mean

that it is in fact his property. Perhaps, you need to do an updated survey

of this section to determine who it really belongs to and therefore who should

be required to maintain it in accordance with local code requirements.
