How do we get out of a lease one and a half months early?

You really can't. About the only ways to do this are to:
1) Find a new renter. Although technically the landlord can hold you to the lease, the landlord cannot collect double rent. So if the landlord has a replacement person to rent the place, EFFECTIVELY (not legally but practically) the lease will end for you as soon as the new renter steps in.
(Technically you would still be breaching the lease, but the landlord's "damages" would be ZERO because they have another renter
2) Riase some defect about the lease or the place. This is very , very hard to do (hard to succeed) in Virginia
