Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Virginia

I left my guitar at a my girlfriend's friends house on February 14, 2011. It's now 4/9/2012 I've tried a few times to attempt to get my guitar back but haven't been successful since the friend took the guitar to college with him which is in a different city. He hasn't attempted to give me a chance to get my guitar back. I've always assumed I could just get my guitar any time so I didn't really let it bother me. But now my girlfriend and I broke up and I tried contacting the friend to get my guitar back. He won't answer me and I don't think he has any intent of giving me a chance to get it back. My girlfriend says under Virginia law it is no longer my property but I have never heard of that. Is this true, and do I have any chance of getting my guitar back legally?

How did your girlfriend become licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth?

Your remedy for this situation would appear to be filing what's called a warrant in

detinue in the general district court for the return of your personal

property, i.e., the guitar, and in the event that it cannot be returned (for

whatever reason), then to ask the court to enter judgment against its

wrongful withholder for the fair market value of the guitar.
